How does sinus surgery help?

Sinus surgery is a helpful option for people with chronic sinus infection and inflammation, recurrent sinus infections or an abnormal growth in the nose or sinuses.

By removing the inflamed tissue within the sinuses and widening the natural openings of the sinuses, improved drainage and ventilation of the sinuses is achieved. Sinus surgery also provides increased access for nasal washes and sprays following surgery, which helps to control sinus inflammation.

Successful sinus surgery followed by ongoing medical management can help patients live congestion and pain free and frequently results in a significant improvement in their sense of smell.

How is septoplasty surgery done?

The operation typically takes about 30-45 minutes and is performed under general anaesthetic. A small incision is made inside the nose, leaving no scars or bruises on your face. Dr Chris Oosthuizen then straightens the septum by taking away some of the cartilage and bone and moving the rest of the septum back to the middle of the nose. Once the septum has been straightened it is all held in place with some dissolvable sutures.

Quite frequently during septoplasty surgery, the turbinates are reduced as well to provide maximal improvement in airflow through the nose. The turbinates are large bulges on the side of the nose that help to warm and humidify air that you breathe in through your nose.

What are the limitations of rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery is a complex and technically challenging procedure that can alter both the appearance and function of the nose. It is essential to have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with rhinoplasty surgery. During the pre-surgery consultation process the extent of the procedure, risks, anticipated recovery as well as limitation of surgery will be discussed at length.

Ultimately however there are some limitations to what can be achieved with rhinoplasty surgery.

Some of these factors include:

  • The underlying anatomy and structure of the nose (nasal cartilage and bone).
  • The thickness of the skin – some individuals have thicker skin which limits the degree of definition that is achievable after surgery.
  • Rhinoplasty surgery cannot change the entire appearance of the face. It is however vital to take the other facial proportions into account when planning rhinoplasty surgery to ensure that the final result is balanced and appears natural.
  • It is possible that there may be minor areas of asymmetry or minor imperfections once the swelling following surgery has fully subsided.
  • Rhinoplasty surgery cannot stop the process of aging. Following surgery, over time, the nose will continue to age at the same rate as the rest of the facial features.
