What I see
- Nasal obstruction: deviated septum, turbinate hypertrophy and nasal valve problems. I assess the whole airway, and septoplasty is offered only where the examination supports it.
- Chronic rhinosinusitis that has not settled with adequate medical treatment, including recurrent acute sinusitis and nasal polyps. Endoscopic sinus surgery is considered after a trial of medical management and a CT scan.
- Rhinoplasty, where the concern is breathing, appearance or both, including deformity after injury and noses previously operated on, such as after cleft lip and palate repair.
- Revision rhinoplasty after surgery elsewhere, whether the concern is the result or the airway.
For adults, my practice is limited to the nose and sinuses. I do not see adults with ear, throat or other head and neck problems. Children are seen for general ENT conditions.
How to refer
Please address the referral to Dr Chris Oosthuizen, ENT Surgeon.
- Fax: (07) 3202 4475
- Email: [email protected]
- Secure messaging: Medical Objects
- Phone: (07) 3202 4636. One number reaches all three rooms.
A standard GP referral to a specialist is valid for twelve months unless you specify otherwise.
Helpful to include:
- the main complaint and how long it has been present
- treatment already tried, including nasal steroid sprays, saline irrigation, antibiotics and their duration
- previous nasal or sinus surgery and nasal injury
- relevant imaging, particularly any sinus CT
- anticoagulants and significant medical history
Rhinoplasty referrals
Since 1 July 2023, a patient seeking cosmetic surgery in Australia needs a referral. It should come from their usual GP where possible, or another GP or specialist independent of the surgeon. They also need two pre-operative consultations with me, and a cooling-off period of at least seven days after consent before surgery can be booked or a deposit taken.
Where there is also a breathing problem, functional surgery may attract a Medicare rebate if the criteria are met: a NOSE Scale score above 45, or a significant acquired, congenital or developmental deformity. I assess the airway at every consultation, so this is documented whether or not it was the reason for referral.
Where I consult and operate

After I see your patient
You will receive a letter after the first consultation with my findings and plan, and an update after any surgery, usually by Medical Objects, fax or post. Routine post-operative care is included in my surgical fee, and I see patients again if a problem arises.
